UNIVERSITY OF SAN AGUSTIN MAKES HISTORY AS IT STAGES TANGHALANG FILIPINO'S MABINING MANDIRIGMA
In a historic milestone for regional theater, Tanghalang Filipino’s critically acclaimed Mabining Mandirigma: A Steampunk Musical officially headed to the University of San Agustin (USA). The run marked the production's very first outreach site outside of Metro Manila, bringing the monumental staging directly to Western Visayas. Winner of 12 Gawad Buhay Awards—including the coveted Outstanding Musical, Mabining Mandirigma is a bold, forward-thinking masterpiece. The production reframes the life and struggles of the "Sublime Paralytic," Apolinario Mabini, through an electrifying steampunk aesthetic, blending historical drama with contemporary rock, striking retro-futuristic visuals, and groundbreaking stage design.
By pushing the boundaries of traditional bioplays, the musical challenges audiences to look at the Philippine Revolution through a sharp, modern lens. For the Ilonggo community and theater enthusiasts across the region, this exclusive staging at the University of San Agustin offers a rare, front-row seat to one of the most celebrated cultural triumphs in modern Philippine theater.

BE INSPIRED! THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN AGUSTIN'S CULTURE AND ARTS INITIATIVES FOR 2026 SO FAR!
The University of San Agustin (USA) has solidified its position as the premier cultural and artistic powerhouse of Western Visayas, leading a series of historic milestones and competitive triumphs. In a monumental first for Philippine theater, the USA Auditorium hosted Tanghalang Filipino’s award-winning Mabining Mandirigma: A Steampunk Musical, marking the production's first-ever outreach staging outside of Metro Manila. Supported by prominent alumni like Dr. Edgar "Injap" Sia II and DoubleDragon Corporation, the university transformed the historic event into a major community gift, providing complimentary seats to over 300 local public high school students, Fine Arts majors, and marginalized sectors, while hosting specialized masterclasses led by acclaimed set designer Toym Imao and director Chris Millado.
Beyond this landmark theatrical staging, USA’s elite performing groups anchored the regional expansion of the CCP Pasinaya Open House Festival, with the world-class USA Choir and Troubadours performing at the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art and the USA Little Theater debuting striking contemporary performance art pieces. The university also completely dominated the cultural arena, sweeping gold medals in Classical Vocal Solo, English Oration, Spoken Word Poetry, and Street Dance Fusion at the Iloilo PRISAA Cultural Competition. Concluding with a massive collaborative folklore spectacle during University Week under the theme “Tuklas Pinas,” San Agustin has robustly championed the decentralization of Philippine art, proving that world-class cultural excellence deeply thrives in the heart of the regions.
